The world is a mobile place, with smart phones in the hands of just about everyone you see walking down the streets these days. Now with this new leap in technology, the prevalence of the iPhone and Android has given rise to a new way of working and playing – which all boils down to two main things – platform and apps.
An app, short for application, is a little bite-sized piece of software that users can download onto their computer, or more likely smartphone, tablet or other wireless device, that could either be a regular website or program, ‘shrunk down’ into an app for usability on mobile devices such as the Facebook app, or it can be a whole new program of its own. The popularity of apps is apparent, with just one glance at Apple’s App store online, you’ll see thousands of apps available both for sale and free download, that will do anything from pick your lottery numbers for you, to allow you to stream online radio.
This is where making your own app comes in. Web users these days love content, they love technology, anything new and different, and being able to access information and entertainment anywhere they happen to go in the world. Having an app available for download – especially one that can be downloaded for free – means getting your band and brand name in fans’ pockets and in their minds. Once they download an app, it’s on their phone until the day they decide to delete it or get a new phone – meaning anytime they look at their phone, which for a lot of people is every 30 seconds, they’re seeing your band.
ReverbNation have a tool that allows musicians to create a simple app for fans to download that you to do have to pay to make, but is free for fans to download. The app allows users to stream your band’s music, keep up with your latest tweets and blog updates, be notified of show dates, buy tickets and see exclusive photos and other content. The tool is pretty simple to use and you can get a free trial by signing up with your artist account here (or creating an artist account if you don’t yet have one). Unless you’re a web developer by trade yourself, going through a simple service like ReverbNation that caters specifically to artists makes things so easy that soon you won’t have fans wondering ‘is there an app for that?’ because, there most certainly is.
